Nigerian singer and songwriter, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as, Rema, has recently shared his belief that relationships in today’s world are for financial gain.
In an exclusive interview with i-D Meets podcast, the ‘Calm Down’ crooner expressed his belief that relationships are now focused solely on financial gains rather than genuine love.
Rema went on to explain that his favorite lyrics from his debut album, ‘Rave & Roses’ is ‘love is not a source of income,’ which was inspired by his personal experiences.
The Mavin Records signee further elaborated that he cannot define love as everyone must live their own version.
He also stated that many relationships in today’s society are solely based on materialistic gains, which he finds disheartening. Rema expressed his desire to live his own version of love, as he has not experienced it yet.
In his words, “My favourite lyric in my album is ‘Love is not a source of income’. It came from my actual experience. A lot of relationships in our new generation is just really all about the gains.”
It’s painful that I can’t really define love. You’ve to live your own version. I have not lived my version. I’m waiting for it though.” He added.
