The 31st South African Music Awards (SAMA 31) has unveiled an exciting lineup of nominees for the coveted “Rest of Africa Award,” celebrating outstanding non-South African artists.
This year’s nominees represent Afropop’s finest voices: Ayra Starr (The Year I Turned 21), Bensoul (The Party & After Party), Wizkid (Morayo), Tems (Born in the Wild), and Fireboy DML (Adedamola).
This award acknowledges the profound influence these artists have had across the continent, reinforcing the SAMAs’ commitment to pan-African unity and creativity.
The Rest of Africa Award plays an essential role in celebrating music that crosses borders and connects us through a shared African sound. The presence of these talented nominees highlights the SAMAs’ commitment to promoting unity within Africa’s creative community.
Last year, the award was won by Zimbabwean artist Edgar Muzah for his album “Son of a Tribe (Royalty Edition),” a captivating project that blends traditional African rhythms with global influences. Muzah’s recognition reinforced the SAMAs’ mission to shine a light on Pan African talent beyond South Africa.
SAMA spokesperson Unati Gwija reflected on last year’s win, stating, “Edgar’s award was more than just a recognition; it demonstrated the vibrant and innovative music that exists across the continent. The increasing interest in this category suggests that we might see even more remarkable talent emerging in the future.”
As we approach the ceremony, television and global streaming audiences can anticipate a vibrant celebration of African artistry. The Rest of Africa Award not only adds prestige to the event but also amplifies cross-border creativity and reinforces South Africa’s pivotal role in the continent’s music scene.
